I am always looking for ways to make holidays special. We are a large, crazy, BUSY, family, and our day to day gets lost in the shuffle. So when I can, I try and make things special, like birthdays, holidays, and milestones.

This year I came across a friend’s post about a Valentine’s Day tradition she has done for years with her kids. Words of affirmation messages, or loves notes, written on hearts and placed on their bedroom doors. One heart per day (taped up at night) from February 1st through Valentines Day. I instantly LOVED this idea (pun intended).

This tradition was so simple to implement. And it was an instant hit with the kids. As they woke up the first morning, they were beaming from their new door decoration. It quickly became a nightly excitement to see what their new heart would say in the morning. The kids loved it so much they even made some hearts for OUR bedroom door to show their love for mom and dad!

This tradition can be as simple or elaborate as you want. It can be as generic or personalized as you want, too. I absolutely loved taking the time to be intentional and think about the characteristics and attributes of each of my (older three) kids. This new tradition was so fun for our family and I think it can bring so much joy to yours too!

Supplies Needed:

  • Paper (colored, white, thick or thin!)
  • Scissors
  • Marker
  • Tape (I suggest blue painters tape to not damage your doors)
  • Lots of LOVE 🙂

The way I chose to implement this activity was simple. Colored construction paper (I found in my kids art cart the night of January 31st!) and a trusted sharpie. The most time consuming thing was coming up with unique and special messages for each kid.

Need help thinking of characteristics and attributes? Look no further! I have compiled a list of 30 to choose from!
